World Cup Willie was the first ever official FIFA World Cup mascot, introduced for the 1966 tournament in England. 

Created by freelance artist Reg Hoye, the character is a, stocky, "mop-top" lion wearing a Union Jack football kit. Willie pioneered modern tournament merchandising, spawning products like toys, badges, and the Lonnie Donegan song "World Cup Willie".
